California DMV Written Test — Free Practice in Chinese and English

A free practice site for the California DMV Class C knowledge test, built for Chinese speakers. Every question appears in Chinese with the English original right below it, so you can study in the language you are comfortable with while getting used to the wording you will actually see at the DMV. No sign-up, no download, nothing to pay.

What you get

Can you take the California written test in Chinese?

Yes. California DMV offers the knowledge test in several languages, Chinese among them, and you choose the language on the touchscreen at the DMV office. That is exactly why this site keeps both languages visible: you answer in Chinese, but you also see the English terms for right-of-way, lane markings, curb colors and so on — useful when you read road signs or talk to an officer in English.

How the test works

A first-time Class C knowledge test is typically 46 questions and you need 38 correct (about 83%) to pass. Renewal tests are shorter. Questions come from the official California Driver’s Handbook. Check dmv.ca.gov for the current official rules — this site is an independent study tool and is not affiliated with the California DMV or any government agency.

Sample questions

A steady yellow traffic light means:

恒亮的黄色交通信号灯代表什么?

Answer: The light is about to turn red — stop if you can do so safely. /

A yellow light warns that red is coming. Slow down and stop if you can do so safely rather than racing to beat the light; only proceed if you're already too close to stop safely.

What must you do at a steady red arrow?

Answer: Stop and do not turn until a green signal appears. /

A red arrow means no movement in that direction. You must wait for a green light or green arrow before turning — you cannot stop and then turn as you would at a regular red light.

A flashing red traffic light means:

闪烁的红色交通信号灯代表什么?

Answer: Come to a full stop, then go when safe. /

Treat a flashing red light exactly like a STOP sign: come to a complete stop, then proceed only when it's safe. Don't confuse it with a flashing yellow, which means slow down but doesn't require stopping.

A green arrow signal means:

绿色箭头信号代表什么?

Answer: A protected turn — oncoming traffic is being held by a red light. /

A green arrow means a protected turn — oncoming and cross traffic are stopped by a red light, so you can safely turn in the direction of the arrow.

A flashing yellow traffic light tells you to:

闪烁的黄色交通信号灯是要你:

Answer: Slow down and proceed with caution. /

A flashing yellow light means slow down and proceed with caution; you don't need to stop. Only a flashing red requires you to stop first.
